7 His next enterprise was the first period of Proa, 1922–23, a lively avant-garde magazine involving an ultraísta grouping which included his cousin Guillermo Juan, Eduardo González Lanuza, and Norah Lange. It ran for three editions, the first of which contained a key essay by Borges: ‘The Nothingness of Personality’, ‘La nadería de la personalidad’, reproduced in Inquisiciones. In 1923, Borges’s first book, Fervor de Buenos Aires, appeared, and a good percentage of the three hundred copies were distributed by stuffing them into the pockets of coats hanging in the cloakroom of Nosotros.
One rainy morning, he told me we ought to give it a try. I reluctantly agreed, and a little later that same morning the thing happened. A third man, Honorio Bustos Domecq, emerged and took over. In the long run he ruled us with a rod of iron and to our amusement, and later to our dismay, he became utterly unlike ourselves, with his own whims, his own puns, and his own very elaborate style of writing.
